Benedict Cumberbatch and Laura Dern to star in a morning of sci-fi drama
According to Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch (The imitation game) and Laura Dern (Marriage story) have signed on to star in the upcoming sci-fi drama titled Morning, which will be set in the near future on a world where there is no end to living and working due to a pill that removes a person’s need to sleep. The award-winning actors will also be joined by A silent place starring Noé Jupe.
“Morning is a joyful, thoughtful and provocative story about a reality not so far from our own where a preoccupation with productivity has destroyed our ability to connect, grieve and love,” producer Adam Ackland said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see this incredibly talented cast and creative team led by Justin, Laura and Noah bring Sam’s brilliantly original script to life.”

Morning will be directed by Justin Kurzel (Nitram) from a screenplay written by Sam Steiner. Cumberbatch, who recently starred in the hit hit Spider-Man: No Coming Home and the acclaimed Jane Campion drama The power of the dogwill also serve as executive producer with Dern and Jayme Lemons for Jaywalker Pictures.
“The film is set in the near future where society has a pill that removes the need to sleep. With the added help of an artificial sun, there is no end to daylight, life and morning work. However, as a younger generation grows up deprived of the world of sleep, they plan to rebel to reclaim their dreams,” reads the synopsis. “The ambitious and driven Cathy (Dern ) was one of the first to champion a world without sleep, but as she and her son Danny (Jupe) pick up the pieces of their lives after the death of her husband Frank (Cumberbatch), she discovers the universe that ‘she helped build begins to crumble around her, as memories she fought so hard to suppress bleed into her waking life. As Danny is drawn into a subversive underworld of dreamers, Cathy must face her nightmares and fight to save her son.

Morning will be executive produced by Adam Ackland and Leah Clarke of SunnyMarch, with Marnie Podo serving as executive producer. HanWay manages its international sales.
