Why? What part of pac-man did the executives look at and say “Yeah, that would be pretty marketable/profitable if we were to make it a live production.”

Why do we keep seeing these incredibly tone-deaf projects greenlit?

I’m just confused as to how they could make a Pac-Man movie. At least other video game movies had a plot to work on.

Makes me think Cartman as Awesome-O had this movie idea. And if so, Adam Sandler is playing in this film when?

You know how people like to complain that Hollywood never takes risks?

Quite a range given that Sonic and Pac-Man aren’t Smash Originals.

Now, if we have at least one combination of a Kirby, Starfox, Earthbound, F-Zero, or Zelda movie, you might be onto something.

I mean, even without Sonic, let’s not pretend we didn’t release a Detective Pikachu movie a few years ago, or a Live Action Monster Hunter movie, or two new live-action Resident Evil properties.

This would have happened regardless of Sonic’s success or failure.

Believe it or not, not all of Sylvester Stallone’s successful action films were followed by a long string of sequels. In the mid to late eighties and nineties, the Rocky star was taking shots at possible franchises and many of them never made it past the No. 1 movie, even when they have made a serious bank. A perfect example is the 1986 action movie Cobra, which made a lot of money but has since been overshadowed by just about everything else Stallone has done. Regardless of, Cobra entered the 10 best movies list aired on Hulu earlier this week.

Sylvester Stallone
Sylvester Stallone in Cobra (1986)

Lt. Marion Cobretti, aka Cobra, is a member of the LAPD and just doesn’t know how to play by the rules. This becomes apparent right away when, rather than negotiating with a gunman to free his hostages, Cobretti throws him with a knife and shoots him. But while Cobretti manages to save most of the hostages, it turns out that the threat posed by the gunman is just beginning. Before his death, the shooter is unleashed against a violent group of social Darwinists calling themselves the New World Order. What most assumed was simply the mindless ramblings of a madman turn out to be true, and Cobra finds himself on a collision course with them.

The woman who ends up bringing Sylvester Stallone’s Cobra into the conflict is model Ingrid Knudsen who is unlucky enough to witness the leader of the New World Order – known as Night Slasher – and his followers commit murder. Cobretti and his partner, Sergeant Tony Gonzales (Reni Santoni), are tasked with guarding Knudsen while she’s in custody, but the New World Order has grown too powerful to let a few cops stop them. An “unexpected” (yeah, right) romance develops, complicating matters, and the New World Order comes to shoot Cobra and Knudsen with everything they’ve got.

sylvester stallone brigitte nielsen
Sylvester Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen in Cobra (1986)

If you ever laugh at 80s action movies and haven’t seen Sylvester Stallone in Cobra? You have to sit down, silence your face and watch the thing to educate yourself. Cobra is like a perfectly molded collection of crime movie action tropes. There’s the hero who’s technically a policeman but he can’t follow the rules, so he’s not just fighting the bad guys but his own bosses. There’s the untraceable damsel-in-distress celebrity who falls in love with the hero. And not so much a trope as hilarious, there’s Sylvester Stallone wearing his sunglasses at night and chewing matches.

Joining Sylvester Stallone as damsel in distress Ingrid Knudsen is Brigitte Nielsen, who had just appeared alongside Stallone as the main villain push in Rocky IV. Playing the Night Slasher was Brian Thompson – a guy whose name you might not know but whose face you almost certainly know. Heavily muscled, with one of Hollywood’s most distinct faces, Thompson had many recurring bit parts in movies and television. He is one of the first guys the eponymous cyborg kills in 1984 The Terminatorhe appeared in various Star Trek series and buffy the vampire slayer. Any fan of X files will be remembered as the intimidating and almost always mute alien bounty hunter.

Cobra was, in part, created from Sylvester Stallone’s failed attempt to be the star of Beverly Hills Cop. Before Eddie Murphy was cast as Axel Foley, Stallone was attached to the film but he rewrote the screenplay; making it less of an action-comedy and mostly an action movie. The script was rejected because the action scenes Stallone wanted would have inflated the budget, so instead the Rocky the actor reworked his script in what became Cobrabased in part on Paula Gosling’s 1974 novel fair game.

Directed by the late George P. Cosmatos – who also directed Sylvester Stallone in Rambo: First Blood Part IICobra did well at the box office, grossing a worldwide gross of $160 million against a budget of $25 million. It was kind of considered a miss, though, because it didn’t make the same kind of money. Rambo go home ($300 million). Critics never liked the film judging by its 18% critics score on rotten tomatoes. With Hulu and the streaming service’s Cinemax add-on, you can tell for yourself whether or not you think Cobra gave good venom.

After directing two of the most successful films of all time, Anthony and Joe Russo have teamed up with Netflix to tell their new action-packed story. “The Gray Man” is packed with over-the-top action. However, you can’t help but notice its ability to hit the same beats as other beloved movies in the genre.

There are huge parts of the film that revolve around the performances of the main actors. A bloated running time and a lack of story, said story mostly consisting of guys with guns, can drive viewers away. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but don’t expect it to improve the way audiences see action movies either.

In a classic game of cat and mouse, animals are replaced by Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. Six, Gosling’s character, is on the run after disobeying CIA orders. When it becomes impossible to apprehend Six, Evans’ character Lloyd Hansen is sent to end the madness by any means necessary. As one can imagine, nothing but pure chaos ensues once the ball is thrown.

Action movies aren’t known for character work, which is a good thing in this movie’s case. If it hadn’t been for the credits after the film, remembering the names of these characters would be more difficult than an evening of math questions. Nothing is presented for the audience to connect or care about these characters.

Gosling and Evans are the two stars. Gosling’s character is cold and gives the same reaction to everything that happens throughout the film. Evans is definitely not the shield-wielding captain many are familiar with from that movie. He is completely unhinged and his extravagant behavior does not match the tone of the film at all.

Speaking of tone, this would have been a great opportunity for the Russo Brothers to show just how campy they can be. With a villain as disturbing as Evans and a protagonist as indestructible as Six, there was a window wide open to make this one of the wackiest action films ever made. It sometimes gets so unbalanced that it’s hard to tell what the movie is for.

Six survives so many near-death experiences that Michael Myers only needs to ask for another suit. Anything grounded in realism was completely ignored for this film. What viewers get is a typical, dependable action movie, but it doesn’t try anything new to separate itself from the rest.

Not everything is bad. While sometimes impossible to keep up with, the action sequences are a lot of fun. Everyone involved worked very hard to put together this film.

In comparison to recent blockbusters, at least “The Gray Man” feels like a real movie. There’s a nightclub scene at the start of the movie that plays with colored lighting and it was easily the best part of the whole movie.

There are stylistic choices to be a fan of. The impressive work of the drone might have gotten boring after a while, but it was still inserted in the right place. The Russo Brothers love to explode place names in bold white letters in the middle of the screen as the landscape changes. It got comical after a while, adding more to the argument that this movie should have been an absolute camp fest.

“The Gray Man” may not be the newest action flick, but it certainly stays true to the reliable action movies that came before it. Equal parts good and bad, it all comes down to what you expect from an action movie. At the end of the day, it was harmless and passable. At least three or four action movies like this come out every year, and they all blend together in a gray mess.

Pop culture fans will also be delighted to hear about the very direct reference to Gosling’s role as Ken in the upcoming “Barbie” movie. A reference to “Barbie” being the most entertaining part of this movie sums up everything you need to know to get in.

A Bridgerton too far

In a triple treat for viewers, Gosling and Evans are joined by Bridgerton idol Régé-Jean Page.

But Page admits that his role in this film is very different from that of the Duke of Hastings.

“It was a lot of fun diving into a new character,” Page said.

“You expect every job to be different from the last job…I like to keep the opportunity to surprise myself, to surprise an audience, to keep your artistic juices flowing.”

In a Barbie world

Possibly Gosling’s most talked about role since Notebook sees him starring as Ken in the big-screen adaptation of Barbie.

Photos of him rollerblading alongside Australian co-star Margot Robbie as Barbie recently lit up gossip sites.

“I feel like I’ve never had as much fun making a movie as I did on Barbie,” Gosling says.

“I can’t wait for people to see it – no matter what people think, this isn’t it, and I’m so excited to share it with everyone and share the Kenergy!”

“People are feeling the Kenergy and I’m glad Ken’s story is being told.”

The gray man is available on Netflix from Friday, July 22

Forget your Avatar: Way of Waters and Bullet Trains. There’s no film more anticipated in 2022 than an Irish indie crime thriller called Blackbird, which is due to hit cinemas on September 2. For years, every rumor of his impending arrival was met with breathless excitement. Extensive sections of social media fizz with fervent speculation about exactly what we can expect when Blackbird flies across our screens.

There’s dizzying excitement about Lord of the Dance star Michael Flatley’s feature debut, which he not only stars in but also writes, directs and produces. But not a frame has been seen of the secret-looking project, which was completed in 2018 but kept away from an increasingly desperate public. So far, that is.

The Blackbird trailer has lived up to all the expectations of aficionados of deeply bizarre vanity projects. Unsurprisingly, it immediately trended on Twitter upon release. Flatley seems to have summoned every cliche imaginable for his directorial debut, in which he cast himself as Victor Blackley, a once-lethal hitman known as, surprisingly enough, Blackbird who has – as it is always the case – turned its back on violence.

As the moody music begins and a priest asks Blackley “Is today the day you wish to confess your sins?”, he grimly replies, “Not today. My sins are mine. ” Leaving aside this apparent non-sequence – who else would they confess sins to? — the 90-second preview — from Dancelord Pictures, no less — offers a quick montage of exotic locales, Eric Roberts as a surly crime lord, beautiful women for Flatley to kiss, and, of course, the line “We gotta get Victor involved. No one can do what he’s doing. The trailer ends with a Blackley in a tuxedo covered in blood announcing “Bless me father, for I have sinned and I’m about to sin again”. The Blackbird clearly sang again.

The film is unlikely to upset the Bafta nominating committee. The question now is not whether it will be good, but how bad it will be. Based on the early footage, Flatley appears to be competing with himself to see if he’s a less accomplished director, writer, or leading man. Admittedly, those waiting to see Blackbird don’t expect the film to have any of the conventional strengths of cinema. That hasn’t stopped at least one eager viewer from announcing he’ll be seated front row center for the film’s premiere screening in Dublin, which he considers little less than his own Cannes festival.

The pitch: There’s something to be said for a good old-school action movie, with clear good guys and bad guys and a cute kid and no superpowers beyond the hero’s ability to craft a weapon out of anything. Add to that a bunch of movie stars and gorgeous European locations, and by every metric, the almighty algorithm might have at its disposal, a movie like The gray man should be a slam-dunk fun time.

That’s why it’s such a shame to say that Joe and Anthony Russo’s original Netflix movie (it’s the most expensive so far) simply falls flat, despite the best efforts of Ryan Gosling and the rest of the all-star cast. Whereas The gray man does its best to hit all the criteria we look for in conspiracy thrillers like this, it perhaps does it too well, resulting in an end product that’s glib in its storytelling and not as entertaining as it wishes.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The gray man in the title is known primarily as “Six” (Ryan Gosling), who was recruited out of prison as a young man by CIA officer Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) to work indefinitely doing the kind of dirty work of the US government. will always deny funding. However (I bet you can guess where that next sentence is going to go), when a job goes wrong and dangerous information falls into his possession, Six becomes the target of his own government, along with private contractor/sociopath Lloyd Hansen. (Chris Evans) tasked with tracking him down.

It’s a setup we’ve certainly seen in the past, but while other films have found unique variations on such a premise, The gray man is a pretty relentless series of plot cliches throughout. Romance novels get a lot of bullshit for being predictable in their plot, but you don’t read romance novels for the twists. You want twists, you watch a movie like this… but in the case of this specific movie, all that awaits you is disappointment. There’s an argument to be made that a film as predictable as this almost serves as viewing comfort. But that’s only if you don’t find it frustrating, to accurately predict what’s going to happen moments before it happens.

Disassembled: Joe and Anthony Russo’s careers have been fascinating to follow over the years, like when the brothers started out as Emmy-winning directors of 2000s comedies like Development stopped, happy endingsand Communityyou probably never would have guessed they would jump right into one of the highest-grossing blockbusters of all time.

But it was actually part of their work on Community – perhaps more specifically the two-part paintball extravaganza “For a Few Paintballs More” and “A Fistful of Paintballs” – which led them to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making them two of the most bankable directors working today after successfully sticking the landing of an eleven-year cinematic arc with Avengers: Endgame.

Not all of the Russos’ MCU action scenes have been universally successful, but you can still generally follow what’s going on. Meanwhile, as exciting theoretically as The gray manThe nine action sets might be, they’re not much fun to watch, due to the effort involved in trying to figure out what’s going on. It shouldn’t be that hard to figure out what’s going on in a car chase or a fistfight, and yet, between the reliance on hyperkinetic drone fire and the inconsistent editing, it’s still hard to tell. even get a basic idea of the geography of each scene.
