Utkarsh Ambudkar is preparing a rap musical movie at Disney+

Ghosts Star Utkarsh Ambudkar is making big moves at Disney. After starring in the CBS series Ghosts and appearing in Hulu’s drama Theranos The stallAmbudkar is in command of best in the world for Disney+.

Ambudkar will wear several hats for the best in the world project he conceived, co-wrote, produced and co-starred. The film tells the story of a young mathematician who vows to become the best MC in the world.

Direction best in the world is Roshan Sethi, who directed 7 days, winning Best First Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards. Principal photography for best in the world begins in May and stars Punam Patel (space force) and Manny Magnus, who stars in Amazon’s I want you to come back. Ambudkar and Patel previously worked together on Netflix Special and CBS’ Ghosts.

According Deadline exclusive report, best in the world follows 12-year-old Prem, played by Magnus, as he navigates life as a this high school student in high school math class. After his best friend Jerome dumps him for the popular band, Prem never feels alone again, despite the support of his mother, Priya (played by Patel). But when Prem discovers that his late father Suresh, played by Ambudkar, was a great rapper, his new fate is sealed. With renewed purpose (and a few helpful, albeit imaginary, appearances from Suresh), Prem vows to break out of the “math kid” mold and become the best MC in the world.

Ambudkar originally pitched the idea to Disney’s Sean Bailey in February 2020 and wrote the feature with Jessica Jones writer Jamie King. The pair wrote together for several years after King went to see Ambudkar battle rap at the now-defunct Leopard Lounge in New York, which appears in the film.

“Collaborating with Disney on a feature film about a nuclear South Asian family with music at its heart means a lot to me personally. I look forward to bringing World’s Best to life with friends and colleagues I’ve known for a long time, as well only with people whose work is relatively new to me. After seeing his first feature film, I knew that Roshan Sethi could capture the intricacies, humor and energy of World’s Best. Manny Magnus is a special find. He’s been dancing and playing his own music since he was six years old. And I know firsthand that Punam Patel will bring laughs and warmth to the role of Priya, the matriarch. Hope World’s Best is super fun to do and watch, Ambudkar said.
